His Incredible Song Will Give You A New Perspective On This Beloved Classic

While we don’t often sit and think about movie soundtracks until the Grammys and Oscars roll around, film scores are critical pieces of the cinematic puzzle.

Imagine Titanic without the driving force of Celine Dion’s iconic voice. Imagine what all of those Disney movies would be like without the songs that made up the soundtrack of your childhood. Imagine your favorite films in total musical silence.

One of the most beloved songs of all is “Over The Rainbow,” which is forever tied to the story of Dorothy’s trip down the Yellow Brick Road. Because it’s a classic, artists over the years have created their own versions of the time-honored track. Take rising musician Chase Holfelder, for example. By singing the song in a minor key, he turns Dorothy’s world into something that is at once intriguing and unsettling.

It’s pretty amazing how such a simple change forces us to see one of our favorite films in an entirely new light.

To learn more about Chase Holfelder’s music, be sure to check him out on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. If you can’t get enough of his voice, follow him on YouTube!

This Creepy AF ’90s Clown Character Is Still Terrifying Today

When I think back on my childhood, there are characters I will never forget.

Whether it’s Big Bird and Elmo from “Sesame Street” or Steve and Blue from “Blue’s Clues,” there are some amazing television characters that have shaped my life. They’re part of the reason I still love television today.

However, there are also plenty of characters I don’t remember or never got to see. In the United Kingdom, for example, Mr. Blobby was on a late-night variety show that pranked celebrities. Even though he’s not an actual children’s character, the show told people he was, and now he has a cult following in the U.S.

Watch as Mr. Blobby thoroughly disturbs the contestants on this game show. Beyond his creepy clown looks, his voice is insane.

Yikes. I think I’ll stick with fuzzy monsters who teach me how to count to ten. Not that there aren’t plenty of creepy kids’ characters from the States…

If This Is Happening Outside Your House, It’s Time To Move

If you don’t live in Australia, then you probably have a very high opinion of kangaroos. And why shouldn’t you? They’re cute, they’re seemingly cuddly, and they’ve starred in plenty of tacky but entertaining movies. Sadly, this version of kangaroos is only limited to the silver screen. Kangaroos in real life, especially males, can be quite terrifying. Not only are full-grown male kangaroos giant and muscular, but they’re also notoriously aggressive.

Don’t believe me? Then check this out.

(via Gem 106)

You see? Even the cutest animals are terrifying in Australia. This is yet another reason to steer clear of that country, I guess. On the bright side, at least the spiders are smaller than kangaroos.

This Drone Captured Something You Would Only Expect To See In A Horror Movie

Sharks might seem cute and cuddly to some, especially after their treatment in various Pixar movies.

However, they are still deadly, focused, killing machines. As evidence for this I present the following drone video featuring a group of tiger sharks in Australia absolutely tearing into the carcass of a dead whale.

The circle of life, my friends:

That is both awesome and brutal…just when you thought nature couldn’t get any more violent.

This Photographer Did A Father-Daughter Photoshoot…And It’s Entirely Creepy

Have you ever wondered would be like after the collapse of civilization? Personally, it’s something I try not to think about. However, urban explorer and photographer Freaktography isn’t like me. For his most recent series, Freaktography grabbed a pair of old-style gas masks and brought his daughter to an abandoned building.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); });

There, the two attempted to imagine what life without all the trappings of modern civilization might look like.

“After a devastating nuclear fallout, this father and daughter waited three years before emerging from their underground fallout shelter only to find wide-scale destruction, carnage, and death.”

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBM_BTF’); });

“Now it’s time to figure out where to start, scavenge for food, and learn how to live in the new post-apocalyptic world. Today, they navigate room to room searching for any belongings from life before the fallout. The little girl has already found her stuffed doll.”

“Still too unsafe to venture outside, our post-apocalyptic father and daughter are stuck inside. The only entertainment they have is each other and whatever items were left over. Dad discovered a heap of old newspapers. The edition he reads today ironically reads ‘Fresh Air Is Free,’ while the young girl becomes closer with her stuffed toy doll.”

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’); });

“When you’re stuck in the same room all day after a nuclear fallout, there is only so much to do. The father and daughter, after scavenging what they could, were able to locate three cards, a white blanket, a stuffed doll, and a stale can of Budweiser.

 So they invented their own card game, anything to keep the girl’s mind off of what was really happening outside.”

“Despite the wide-scale destruction, regardless of the damage, death and shutdown of life as it had been known, life must go on.

The little girl will be taught just as she would have been in life before the fallout. She will learn history, she will learn to read and to write, she will learn survival skills, and she will learn science.

 It’s not known how many have survived, but this father knows that his little girl, having survived the fallout and three years in a shelter, is the key to the future and life carrying on in the new world.”

Meet David Berkowitz, One Of The Worst Serial Killers Of All Time

I think we can agree that all serial killers are awful human beings, but some are far worse than others.

This is especially true for David Berkowitz, who called himself the “Son of Sam.” This man terrorized the people of New York City from 1976 to 1977.

Though police launched a massive manhunt against him, he not only eluded them, but he also left letters that taunted them and threatened more killings. And because of the press’s coverage of his letters, he became one of the world’s most notorious serial killers.

Berkowitz was born as Richard David Falco in 1953, but he had been the product of his mother, Elizabeth Broder’s affair with Joseph Klineman, a married man who wanted nothing to do with his newborn son. Worried that Klineman would leave her if she kept their baby, she gave him away a few days after he was born.

iStock

The baby was quickly adopted by Pearl and Nathan Berkowitz, who renamed him David Richard Berkowitz. Though his birth mother was still alive, they told their new son that she had died during childbirth.

He had a great childhood in the Bronx, but he became a troubled boy nonetheless.

Berkowitz hated school because he was constantly bullied for being adopted and he often had nightmares as a result of his morbid fascination with horror movies. He also carried horrible guilt because he believed that he was responsible for his biological mother’s death.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’); });

The only joy he seemed to get out of life was being with his mother, Pearl. But his dark side began to show when he secretly poisoned her pet parakeet because he was jealous of the attention it took away from him.

iStock

Though he adored his mother, he would scream at her and call her names at times. She took him to a child psychologist when he was 10, but it didn’t help.

iStock

Right before Pearl died of breast cancer when he was 14, Berkowitz yelled that he hated her and he hoped she would die. It was the last thing he would ever say to her.

In 1971, Berkowitz joined the U.S. Army at the age of 18 and served in South Korea. He was discharged in 1974 and returned to New York. This is when his adopted father, Nathan, told him that his birth mother hadn’t actually died. The young man decided to find his birth parents.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI2_BTF’); });

But after searching for months and coming up with nothing, he joined a cult of Satan worshipers to feel a sense of belonging. He took a liking to their dark rituals instantly, and even made a blood pact that he would serve the Devil.

iStock

Meanwhile, after a year of searching for his birth mother, he finally came in contact with her. However, he was soon horrified to discover the truth about his real father, whom he previously believed to be Tony Falco, her first husband.

iStock

He became enraged at this news, but he buried it deep inside and began seeing his mother less and less, quelling a deep desire to kill her and the rest of his birth family.

His murderous rage finally manifested itself when he stabbed a teenage girl named Michelle Forman with a hunting knife in 1975. Fortunately, she survived, but he never became a suspect and quickly moved to Yonkers, New York.

iStock

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI3_BTF’); });

Unfortunately for the people of New York City, however, his murder spree was only just beginning. In 1976, he began targeting young women and couples in a series of shooting attacks.

iStock

His killings were highly publicized and he quickly became known as the “.44 Caliber Killer” after his weapon of choice — but nobody knew his real identity.

Berkowitz ended up killing six people and injuring seven by 1977, when his nicknamed changed to the “Son of Sam” after police found a handwritten letter taunting them near the bodies of Alexander Esau and Valentina Suriani, a couple he had murdered.

In full, it read:

I am deeply hurt by your calling me a women hater. I am not. But I am a monster. I am the “Son of Sam.” I am a little “brat”. When father Sam gets drunk he gets mean. He beats his family. Sometimes he ties me up to the back of the house. Other times he locks me in the garage. Sam loves to drink blood. “Go out and kill” commands father Sam. Behind our house some rest. Mostly young — raped and slaughtered — their blood drained — just bones now. Papa Sam keeps me locked in the attic, too. I can’t get out but I look out the attic window and watch the world go by. I feel like an outsider. I am on a different wave length then everybody else — programmed too kill. However, to stop me you must kill me. Attention all police: Shoot me first — shoot to kill or else. Keep out of my way or you will die! Papa Sam is old now. He needs some blood to preserve his youth. He has had too many heart attacks. Too many heart attacks. “Ugh, me hoot it hurts sonny boy.” I miss my pretty princess most of all. She’s resting in our ladies house but I’ll see her soon. I am the “Monster” — “Beelzebub” — the “Chubby Behemouth.” I love to hunt. Prowling the streets looking for fair game — tasty meat. The wemon of Queens are z prettyist of all. I must be the water they drink. I live for the hunt — my life. Blood for papa. Mr. Borrelli, sir, I dont want to kill anymore no sir, no more but I must, “honour thy father.” I want to make love to the world. I love people. I don’t belong on Earth. Return me to yahoos. To the people of Queens, I love you. And I wa want to wish all of you a happy Easter. May God bless you in this life and in the next and for now I say goodbye and goodnight. Police — Let me haunt you with these words; I’ll be back! I’ll be back! To be interrpreted as — bang, bang, bang, bank, bang — ugh!! Yours in murder Mr. Monster

Sam turned out to be Berkowitz’s neighbor, Sam Carr, who happened to be the father of two of the Satanic cult members. Later on, after Berkowitz was finally arrested for his crimes, he claimed that Sam was the Devil and that he’d sent demons to tell him to kill.

He also sent another disturbing letter directly to newspaper columnist Jimmy Breslin, threatening to kill again on the one-year anniversary of his first shooting.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI4_BTF’); });

It ended up being published a week later in the newspaper after Breslin notified police, and it sold over one million copies. Berkowitz immensely enjoyed how famous his killer identity had become and loved the power he felt from keeping the city in fear.

The people of New York became so terrified after reading it that women cut their hair short and dyed it blonde to avoid becoming his victims, as he seemed to prefer shooting women with long, dark hair.

Berkowitz’s reign of terror finally came to an end when a woman named Cacilia Davis told police she had seen a man walking by her with a suspicious object in his hand before she ran away and heard shots fired behind her. His car had been parked there that night, so police checked every vehicle that had been ticketed in the area and Berkowitz’s car turned up in their search.

iStock

When they went through his vehicle, they found a rifle, a bag full of ammunition, maps of the crime scenes, and another threatening letter.

They knew they had their man and apprehended him later that night as he got into his car. He did not struggle, but smiled proudly and quickly confessed to all of the shootings and pled guilty to his crimes.

In 1978, Berkowitz was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for each of his murders, and remains at Attica Correctional Facility in New York.

He first claimed to be possessed by a demon, but said later in 1979 that he had lied about it and had really felt anger towards women in general, causing him to want to murder them.

A lot of people believed that Berkowitz would try to sell his story to a writer or filmmaker because he was such a big presence in the press, so the New York State Legislature passed the “Son of Sam laws,” which were designed to keep criminals from profiting off the publicity of their crimes.

Since he has been in prison, Berkowitz has converted to evangelical Christianity and claims that being involved in the Satanic cult was a big reason why he murdered all those people. But many are convinced that if he were to be released, he’d drop his religion and go right back to killing.

I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say that I definitely agree with them.

9 Real-Life Ghost Encounters People Have Had After Watching Scary Movies

I’ve always been a huge fan of scary movies, but I won’t lie. Some of them have given me horrible nightmares.

Although I’m okay with the occasional bad dream because I love the genre so much, I don’t think I could continue watching horror flicks if they brought real paranormal activity into my life.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); });

The people below know exactly what I mean, because they’ve shared seriously terrifying stories about what happened to them after watching (and even starring in) horror films.

1. Vera Farmiga, who starred in “The Conjuring” and “The Conjuring 2,” said that when she went home from filming one night, she found three slashes across her laptop’s screen. Director James Wan also saw his dog growling one night at what appeared to be nothing at all.

iStock

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBM_BTF’); });

The Perrons, the real family that the film was based on, came to the set one day. When they went home, Carolyn Perron felt a strange presence push her to the ground.

2. Nancy P. told Week In Weird about the chilling nightly visitor she had to entertain after watching “The Conjuring 2.”

iStock

I wanted to send an email to let you know that strange things have started happening in my house after my [husband] and I watched “The Conjuring 2.” Everything was fine until the end of the movie when Lorraine said the name “Valak.” As soon as she said the name, our back door swung open and it sounded like someone came running into the house. When my husband went into the kitchen to check, there was no one there. For the last three days, we have heard knocking on our walls at night and the sound of someone walking up our stairs. I know it is because of that movie and we’re already talking about calling a priest over for a blessing on the house. There is something wrong with that movie.

3. Maria B. and her family were plagued by a destructive phantom after they watched part of “The Conjuring 2” as well.

iStock

Just wanted to throw this out there. Last night we watched part of “The Conjuring 2.” Not all of it, since my son was scared already. My husband went to go put my son off to bed and slept with him. At almost 3 a.m., my husband came back to our room. [He] lies down in bed and in our closet we hear a sound of dishes breaking. My husband gets up turns on the light. And the picture of us married, the beautiful picture frame it stood in was broken in two. I should not have agreed to watch that movie. All my stuff in my closet is put away so neatly. I am still trying to understand how it could have flown and broken like that. Sorry to have bugged you, just thought you should know. People should not watch that movie.

4. Gina Frost from the U.K. suffered through 40 years of terrifying hallucinations after watching “The Exorcist” as a teenager.

iStock

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’); });

Just one week later, I was in my bedroom and I began seeing rats running up and down the walls. I ended up locking myself in my bedroom for weeks because I was so petrified. I thought I was going mad. It took me about nine weeks before I felt like I could go back into the world.

Ever since then, I have been experiencing awful hallucinations that make me feel sick. I hallucinate about my own death. It’s like I am watching a film in my head where I am being ripped apart and tortured. It is enough to turn anybody’s stomach and it makes me feel ill.

The hallucinations have taken over my life when it comes to social situations. Ever since I was 18, I have tried to avoid being in social situations just in case I have a hallucination. Between the ages of 18 and 39, the hallucinations were erratic, but over the past 10 years they have gotten worse.

At one point, I was having up to three hallucinations a week and each one lasted three minutes. I often felt exhausted afterwards.

I haven’t been able to watch a horror film since.

Although things got better for Frost after she started taking medication, her hallucinations still haven’t fully gone away.

5. After people went inside a theater in Rome to watch “The Exorcist,” lighting struck a nearby church and left the shape of a cross on the ground below. This film also caused many people to pass out and vomit while watching it that night.

iStock

Many creepy things also happened during the making of the movie. Several actors and their family members (including relatives of the crew) died shortly after filming was finished, and multiple fires broke out on set.

6. Jennifer Carpenter, star of “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” believes that she was followed home by some kind of entity during the making of the movie.

iStock

When we were shooting, my stereo kept turning itself on in the middle of the night. It freaked me out because it started playing Pearl Jam’s “Alive” — just the “I’m still alive” part. It stayed with me for a while.

7. In the middle of watching “The Conjuring 2,” Joanne P. and her family heard terrifying screams that weren’t part of the movie.

iStock

We were just watching “The Conjuring 2” and my family paused it while I went to my bedroom to change into my pajamas. As soon as I walked into my bedroom, I could hear loud screaming. I thought they turned the TV up really loud in the living room, but then realized it was coming through my bedroom TV speaker. There was nothing on my TV. My two sons, grandson, and son’s girlfriend all witnessed it. Needless to say, we stopped watching the movie.

8. Actress JoBeth Williams said that during the filming of “Poltergeist,” she found the pictures on her walls hanging crookedly every night, even though she fixed them every time.

iStock

Heather O’ Rourke, the star of the movie, even passed away at only 12 years old, but she wasn’t the only actress to die. Dominique Dunne was murdered by her ex-boyfriend the same year the movie was released.

It was believed that real human skeletons were used in the film and that this cursed everyone associated with it.

9. William Castle, the producer of “Rosemary’s Baby,” received many letters from people who had watched the movie. They told him that he had unleashed evil by making it. Not long after, he suffered a urinary blockage and had to have surgery. During his operation, he reportedly shouted, “Rosemary, for God’s sake, drop the knife!”

iStock

Director Roman Polanski’s pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, was tragically murdered by Charles Manson a year after the film’s release, and John Lennon was shot outside of the hotel that’s in the movie.

Composer Krzysztof Komeda also passed away one year after the release due to a brain aneurism, just like one of the characters did in the movie.

(via Week in Weird / Mirror / Dread Central)

As much as it pains me to say this, I might have to take a break from watching horror films for a while. Those stories are just way too freaky.

This Is The Perfect Two-Minute Horror Movie To Play At Your Halloween Party

One of my favorite parts of Halloween is watching as many scary movies as I can handle.

But for me, it’s way more fun when my family and friends join me for all the jump-scares and terrifying moments — even if I have to force them (or trick them) to sit through the films. That’s why I’m making it my mission to share this delightful piece of horror at every Halloween party I go to this year so I can enjoy all the collective terror.

The short film “Lights Out” won the Best Director award for the 2013 Who’s There Film Challenge, and you’ll soon see why…

Well, I’m leaving my lights on at night for the rest of eternity.
