The Real Story Of Sweeney Todd Is Far More Disturbing Than The Penny Dreadful Version

Most of us are familiar with the grisly story of Sweeney Todd, otherwise known as “the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

This murderous character killed his victims by luring them into his barbershop and slitting their throats as they sat in his chair. He then pulled a lever that dropped them down through a trap door into his basement. After they were dead, he cut up their bodies with the help of Mrs. Lovett, the pie shop owner next door. That’s when the devious pair turned their victims into meat pies to sell to unwitting customers.

Up until now, it’s been assumed that this story is entirely fictional, but what if I told you that it might have been inspired by real events?

In the story, the infamous pie shop was located on Fleet Street in London.

But in the 14th century, the Rue des Marmousets bakery was actually located in France near the Notre Dame Cathedral, a popular tourist area.

And it sat right next door to — you guessed it — a barbershop.

Like Sweeney Todd’s character, the resident barber lured foreigners inside with promises of a close shave.

While they waited in the chair, he slit their throats and took them into his basement, where he and the baker ground their flesh and used it to make meat pies. Sounds familiar.

They kept this up for three years, until a dog was found barking outside of the barbershop. It refused to leave that spot for three days.

iStock

The dog belonged to one of their victims, who they mistakenly thought wouldn’t be missed.

iStock

But the man hadn’t traveled to Paris alone, and when his wife found their dog barking and suspected that it had something to do with his disappearance, she called the police. They later found a pile of human bones in the basement.

As punishment for their horrific crimes, the killers were burned to death.

iStock

Their shops were torn down, so nothing remained to prove that these events were real, except for a bronze statue of the dog that blew their cover.

Well, there goes any sense of comfort we once had about these monsters only existing in plays and movies.

This Questionnaire From Serial Killer Richard Ramirez Is Very Disturbing

From 1985 until his death in 2013, serial killer Richard Ramirez (aka The Night Stalker), was in prison. During this time, Ramirez managed to earn himself quite the devoted fan club. Behind bars, he was never short on letters to read and respond back to. At one point, someone sent Ramirez a friendship questionnaire, not unlike something you would send to a new pen pal.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); });

Between April 1984 and August 1985, Ramirez killed 13 people in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBM_BTF’); });

The serial killer was known for his savage violence after breaking into people’s homes in the dead of night. Often, his targets were chosen completely at random.

Because he had so much time on his hands in prison, when he received the friend questionnaire, Ramirez actually took the time to fill it out and mail it back. To say some of his answers are a little politically incorrect would be an understatement.

In 30 Seconds, This Silent Film Will Creep You Out More Than Any Horror Movie

While Hollywood can still put out a genuinely creepy film when it wants to, most scary movies these days miss the mark. That’s why vintage films (and even silent films) are enjoying a resurgence at the moment.

If you think silent movies can’t be just as scary as the CGI-filled flicks in theaters today, you’re so wrong. As evidence, I present a clip from the 1911 silent film “L’Inferno.” In this scene, you’ll see Satan enjoying a nice meal made of human flesh.

Even though the effects are crude, it’s still creepier than any movie I’ve seen over the past few years.

(source: peeringthrough)

I think modern filmmakers could learn a thing or two from old productions like this. Sometimes, practical effects (even if they look weird) can be 10 times more disturbing than anything made on a computer.

This Photographer Did A Father-Daughter Photoshoot…And It’s Entirely Creepy

Have you ever wondered would be like after the collapse of civilization? Personally, it’s something I try not to think about. However, urban explorer and photographer Freaktography isn’t like me. For his most recent series, Freaktography grabbed a pair of old-style gas masks and brought his daughter to an abandoned building.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); });

There, the two attempted to imagine what life without all the trappings of modern civilization might look like.

“After a devastating nuclear fallout, this father and daughter waited three years before emerging from their underground fallout shelter only to find wide-scale destruction, carnage, and death.”

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBM_BTF’); });

“Now it’s time to figure out where to start, scavenge for food, and learn how to live in the new post-apocalyptic world. Today, they navigate room to room searching for any belongings from life before the fallout. The little girl has already found her stuffed doll.”

“Still too unsafe to venture outside, our post-apocalyptic father and daughter are stuck inside. The only entertainment they have is each other and whatever items were left over. Dad discovered a heap of old newspapers. The edition he reads today ironically reads ‘Fresh Air Is Free,’ while the young girl becomes closer with her stuffed toy doll.”

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’); });

“When you’re stuck in the same room all day after a nuclear fallout, there is only so much to do. The father and daughter, after scavenging what they could, were able to locate three cards, a white blanket, a stuffed doll, and a stale can of Budweiser.

 So they invented their own card game, anything to keep the girl’s mind off of what was really happening outside.”

“Despite the wide-scale destruction, regardless of the damage, death and shutdown of life as it had been known, life must go on.

The little girl will be taught just as she would have been in life before the fallout. She will learn history, she will learn to read and to write, she will learn survival skills, and she will learn science.

 It’s not known how many have survived, but this father knows that his little girl, having survived the fallout and three years in a shelter, is the key to the future and life carrying on in the new world.”

13 Of The Most Unintentionally Terrifying Children’s Characters That Have Been Created

When children get scared of seemingly innocuous things, it’s easy to assume that they’re just quick to frighten.

I remember getting really creeped out by some of the movies I watched as a kid, and I had previously chalked my fear up to the same reason. However, as I’ve revisited a few of the TV shows and films that I used to love so much, I’ve realized that my younger self had every right to be afraid — some children’s characters are seriously disturbing.

Whether they’re terrifying in their looks or behavior, it’s clear that these freaky characters really aren’t meant for little ones to see.

1. This absolute creep is from a Slovakian children’s show.

2. Fofão is from a Brazilian children’s show in which he is a magical alien that came down to Earth to start a band and sing with a bunch of young kids. His horrifying face really says it all.

3. Even the beloved “Sesame Street” has a super creepy character called Nobody.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot(‘/37886402/VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’, [300, 250], ‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF_581951d83349d’).addService(googletag.pubads()) googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_MB”, “VN_”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_SC”, “VN_ORGN”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_TS”, “TS_D”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_AT”, “VN_ORGN_PG_D_REV_1.0_ASYNC_DEFAULT”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_CC”, “VN_ORGN_D_UNK_118298_A”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_PG”, “1”); googletag.enableServices(); googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF_581951d83349d’); });

4. Téléchat is a French satirical news show with unsettling puppet animals, one of which has human breasts.

5. Oobi is a show on Nick Jr. that features a family of hands with eyeballs glued on top. Seriously, who comes up with this stuff?

6. The Greedy from “Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure” is definitely going to give me nightmares.

In the movie, Raggedy Ann and Andy are on an adventure to rescue their toy friend. Along the way, they fall into a taffy pit that is actually a living being who can’t stop himself from consuming everything he comes across. After Raggedy Ann mentions that she has a candy heart, he goes crazy and tries to cut it out of her so he can eat it.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that the way he moves around is absolutely disgusting.

7. When Courage from “Courage the Cowardly Dog” feels guilty about something he does in one episode, this inexplicable fetus-like blue nightmare randomly pops up.

8. The puppets used in the Australian kids’ show “The Wiggles” look like they want to eat your soul.

9. Not much is known about this terrifying creature other than his name, which is Morso. He’s from a Finnish children’s show.

10. Karbonkel is from a show in the Netherlands that aims to teach kids how to read. However, it goes without saying that he instead gives a lot of them nightmares.

11. A ’70s kids’ show called “Pipkins” has a character named Hartley Hare who, besides being generally creepy, gets extremely inappropriate in one episode.

He pulls out a glove puppet and says to the viewers, “You can be naughty with a glove puppet.” Then he proceeds to heavily imply that this means doing sexual things with the puppet.

12. The puppets from the ’80s show “Peppermint Park” have been aptly described as coming straight from Hell.

13. The educational show “Wizbit” is about a magical talking wizard’s hat, and could definitely double as a horror movie with its unnerving characters, music, and settings.

Even as an adult, I feel really disturbed right now. I can’t even imagine the terror that the kids who see these characters must feel!

PSA: Don’t Anger The Wrong Guys, Or You Might End Up With A Pair Of Cement Shoes

When it comes to vintage crime noir movies, nothing is more iconic than the threat of giving someone a pair of cement shoes.

That is, encasing a person’s feet in concrete and dropping them into a body of water. While Hollywood co-opted this extreme form of mafia justice on the silver screen, it’s unclear exactly how widespread the practice has been throughout history.

But a recent story out of Brooklyn, New York, shows that when it comes to methods of disposal, the mafia says, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Earlier this week, police discovered the body of a 28-year-old career criminal wrapped in black plastic bags on Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn. The man had his arms tied behind his back and his body was weighed down with cement shoes.

iStock

New York City Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce told the press that the victim had his feet “submerged in poured concrete,” and that it was “obviously a homicide.”

iStock

However, those pouring the concrete allowed a little too much air to get in during the process, which caused the body to float to the surface and wash up on the shore.

iStock

Traditionally, cement shoes are made by putting a victim’s feet through the holes of a cinder block and then filling those holes with concrete, but buckets are also used. It’s unclear how exactly this victim’s “shoes” were constructed.

(via DNA Info)

At the time of this writing, police have identified the man who was killed but are withholding his name until family members can be notified. Let this be a lesson to never cross someone who can legitimately threaten you with the possibility of using cement shoes.
