This News Doesn’t Bode Well For Avoiding An Asteroid In The Future

If you were around back in the late 1990s, you probably remember the brief love affair that America had with asteroid disaster films (“Deep Impact” was clearly the superior film). The movies brought an awareness to the general public of the possibility that Earth could be destroyed at any moment by a random, giant rock from space.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); });

Luckily, we have the folks at NASA watching out for us and keeping an eye on the sky. With all their great technology, there’s no way an asteroid could possibly sneak up on us…right? Well, that’s where you’d be wrong.

This week, NASA researchers spotted and catalogued a rather large asteroid by the name of 2016 QA2. Barely hours after it was first spotted, QA2 zipped by Earth, at a distance even closer than our moon.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBM_BTF’); });

Luckily, in the case of QA2, even if it had struck Earth, the damage would have been minimal — at least compared to the kind portrayed in various Hollywood films.

Unfortunately, there are a ton of asteroids out there. Which makes it kind of an impossible task to spot and catalogue them all.

To protect Earth from further asteroid impacts, Congress tasked NASA with an ambitious goal to be able to detect 90 percent of all asteroids 450 feet in size or larger by 2020. Sadly, funding shortfalls have put a damper on accomplishing this on time.

Alright, now that is terrifying. Just another daily reminder that life on this little rocky planet of ours can end at any second for really any reason at all.

This Questionnaire From Serial Killer Richard Ramirez Is Very Disturbing

From 1985 until his death in 2013, serial killer Richard Ramirez (aka The Night Stalker), was in prison. During this time, Ramirez managed to earn himself quite the devoted fan club. Behind bars, he was never short on letters to read and respond back to. At one point, someone sent Ramirez a friendship questionnaire, not unlike something you would send to a new pen pal.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); });

Between April 1984 and August 1985, Ramirez killed 13 people in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas.

The serial killer was known for his savage violence after breaking into people’s homes in the dead of night. Often, his targets were chosen completely at random.

Because he had so much time on his hands in prison, when he received the friend questionnaire, Ramirez actually took the time to fill it out and mail it back. To say some of his answers are a little politically incorrect would be an understatement.

This 1980 Movie Is So Controversial That The Director Was Arrested…For Murder

What’s the scariest movie you’ve ever seen? Well, the 1980 Italian-made, cult horror hit “Cannibal Holocaust” is almost certainly scarier than your pick. The movie is considered one of the great cult horror movies of the last 40 years, but it’s not without its fair share of controversy. It’s still banned in a number of countries, and for reasons you’ll soon learn, the director was arrested for murder after its release.

The plot of “Cannibal Holocaust” follows a documentary film crew that goes missing in the Amazon rainforest while trying to find and film real-life cannibals living there.

The movie opens with a rescue team recovering the missing crew’s cans of film.

The found footage is then flown to New York, where a television station wishes to broadcast it. After that, we learn of the terrors the crew inflicted on the natives as well as the horrors the natives inflicted onto them.

Needless to say, upon its release, the film provoked quite a bit of controversy. Because the violence is so realistic and shocking, after the premiere, Italian police confiscated the footage and arrested director Ruggero Deodato.

After his arrest, the courts charged Deodato with murder.

They believed he may have actually killed some of the actors during filming. Making matters worse, Deodato had forced his stars to sign agreements not to appear in any media for one year after the movie. The intent was to make the premise of “Cannibal Holocaust” seem more realistic.

In court, Deodato (pictured below in 2008) was forced to explain how he and his crew achieved some of the more brutal death scenes.

The actors were forced to come out of hiding and present themselves to the court. Eventually, police dropped the charges, though authorities in Deodato’s native Italy still decided to ban the film.

I know I’m supposed to be disgusted at this point, but I actually really want to check this movie out. If you’re looking for a good movie this weekend, you can rent the whole thing on YouTube.

This Drone Captured Something You Would Only Expect To See In A Horror Movie

Sharks might seem cute and cuddly to some, especially after their treatment in various Pixar movies.

However, they are still deadly, focused, killing machines. As evidence for this I present the following drone video featuring a group of tiger sharks in Australia absolutely tearing into the carcass of a dead whale.

The circle of life, my friends:

That is both awesome and brutal…just when you thought nature couldn’t get any more violent.

In 30 Seconds, This Silent Film Will Creep You Out More Than Any Horror Movie

While Hollywood can still put out a genuinely creepy film when it wants to, most scary movies these days miss the mark. That’s why vintage films (and even silent films) are enjoying a resurgence at the moment.

If you think silent movies can’t be just as scary as the CGI-filled flicks in theaters today, you’re so wrong. As evidence, I present a clip from the 1911 silent film “L’Inferno.” In this scene, you’ll see Satan enjoying a nice meal made of human flesh.

Even though the effects are crude, it’s still creepier than any movie I’ve seen over the past few years.

I think modern filmmakers could learn a thing or two from old productions like this. Sometimes, practical effects (even if they look weird) can be 10 times more disturbing than anything made on a computer.

This Guy Rendered His Own Brain Scan In 3-D And It’s Morbid, But Also Fascinating

If you stop and think about it, medical technology is almost like modern-day science fiction.

Although the media and society at large pay attention to technological advancements, an outsized share of that attention is focused on more consumer-oriented inventions.

What gets lost in the shuffle is medical technology that is slowly becoming the stuff we once only found in books and movies. Take, for example, what Redditor taurus_manure was able to do following an MRI scan for migraines.

He was able to take data from his MRI scan and use another piece of software to create these 3-D renderings of his own skull.

Pretty wild, right? According to taurus_manure, the process of producing work like this is surprisingly easy.

What you need to do is first get a copy of the MRI data from your doctor. You might have to pay a small fee, but most will give these scans out for free.

Then you can take the 2-D images from the MRI data and combine them to create 3-D versions.

For the more technologically advanced, you can do this process by hand, but the Redditor suggests searching for DICOM 3-D reconstruction software on Google if you’re a beginner.

With the help of such software, you can get up close and personal with the inside of your own head.

But why would anyone do this?

Well, for one, 3-D models can be used to create 3-D printed body parts.

Unless you’re a doctor from the future, you’ll only be able to print those parts in plastic. That being said, it’d still be pretty cool to see your body turned inside out.

Say cheese!

That would be awesome to have on display when guests come over. Talk about a conversation starter, am I right?

This Photographer Did A Father-Daughter Photoshoot…And It’s Entirely Creepy

Have you ever wondered would be like after the collapse of civilization? Personally, it’s something I try not to think about. However, urban explorer and photographer Freaktography isn’t like me. For his most recent series, Freaktography grabbed a pair of old-style gas masks and brought his daughter to an abandoned building.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); });

There, the two attempted to imagine what life without all the trappings of modern civilization might look like.

“After a devastating nuclear fallout, this father and daughter waited three years before emerging from their underground fallout shelter only to find wide-scale destruction, carnage, and death.”

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBM_BTF’); });

“Now it’s time to figure out where to start, scavenge for food, and learn how to live in the new post-apocalyptic world. Today, they navigate room to room searching for any belongings from life before the fallout. The little girl has already found her stuffed doll.”

“Still too unsafe to venture outside, our post-apocalyptic father and daughter are stuck inside. The only entertainment they have is each other and whatever items were left over. Dad discovered a heap of old newspapers. The edition he reads today ironically reads ‘Fresh Air Is Free,’ while the young girl becomes closer with her stuffed toy doll.”

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’); });

“When you’re stuck in the same room all day after a nuclear fallout, there is only so much to do. The father and daughter, after scavenging what they could, were able to locate three cards, a white blanket, a stuffed doll, and a stale can of Budweiser.

 So they invented their own card game, anything to keep the girl’s mind off of what was really happening outside.”

“Despite the wide-scale destruction, regardless of the damage, death and shutdown of life as it had been known, life must go on.

The little girl will be taught just as she would have been in life before the fallout. She will learn history, she will learn to read and to write, she will learn survival skills, and she will learn science.

 It’s not known how many have survived, but this father knows that his little girl, having survived the fallout and three years in a shelter, is the key to the future and life carrying on in the new world.”

PSA: Don’t Anger The Wrong Guys, Or You Might End Up With A Pair Of Cement Shoes

When it comes to vintage crime noir movies, nothing is more iconic than the threat of giving someone a pair of cement shoes.

That is, encasing a person’s feet in concrete and dropping them into a body of water. While Hollywood co-opted this extreme form of mafia justice on the silver screen, it’s unclear exactly how widespread the practice has been throughout history.

But a recent story out of Brooklyn, New York, shows that when it comes to methods of disposal, the mafia says, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Earlier this week, police discovered the body of a 28-year-old career criminal wrapped in black plastic bags on Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn. The man had his arms tied behind his back and his body was weighed down with cement shoes.

New York City Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce told the press that the victim had his feet “submerged in poured concrete,” and that it was “obviously a homicide.”

However, those pouring the concrete allowed a little too much air to get in during the process, which caused the body to float to the surface and wash up on the shore.

Traditionally, cement shoes are made by putting a victim’s feet through the holes of a cinder block and then filling those holes with concrete, but buckets are also used. It’s unclear how exactly this victim’s “shoes” were constructed.

(via DNA Info)

At the time of this writing, police have identified the man who was killed but are withholding his name until family members can be notified. Let this be a lesson to never cross someone who can legitimately threaten you with the possibility of using cement shoes.
