This Abandoned Facility Was Once Home To Weapons Capable Of World Destruction

In movies, we often see men in suits pushing the “red button” that launches a missile at an enemy nation, but rarely does the camera show us the facility where the missile was launched from.

Urban explorer Jim Sullivan managed to sneak his way into an abandoned Titan I ICBM missile complex in Colorado.

And he took some pretty eerie, but interesting, pictures. ?

At one point this facility was state of the art…

But now, it looks as if it’s from an alternate universe where the Cold War erupted into a nuclear street fight.

This is a map of a typical Titan launch complex.

var OX_ads = OX_ads || []; OX_ads.push({ slot_id: “537251602_56eb9607cd92a”, auid: “537251602” });

In recent years, the Titans have all been decommissioned.

They were replaced by what is currently the only land-based intercontinental ballistic missile, the LGM-30 Minuteman.

There are about 450 LGM-30 Minuteman silos hidden in Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming.

Hopefully, the Minuteman silos are in much better shape.

var OX_ads = OX_ads || []; OX_ads.push({ slot_id: “537251604_56eb9607cda97”, auid: “537251604” });

And, of course, an urban exploration journey wouldn’t be complete without an eerie shot of a black silhouette hiding in the corridors…

One Intoxicated Nurse Changed Two Families’ Lives Forever With A Monumental Mistake

Normally, switched-at-birth narratives are reserved for network dramas and blockbuster movies, but Sophie Serrano’s story is a real-life nightmare.

When she was 18 years old, the French woman gave birth to a beautiful baby girl with her boyfriend, Davy. The two were thrilled when their little one, Manon, came into the world. But shortly after her birth, nurses placed Manon in an incubator to deal with a case of jaundice. The new mother felt a twinge of anxiety, but she was assured that everything would be okay.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); });

And that certainly would’ve been the case had the nurse who returned Manon to her mother not been intoxicated at the time. As soon as Sophie held her baby, she knew that something was wrong. Convinced that she was just being paranoid, however, she and Davy went home to start a new life with their tiny addition. Little did they know that the baby with whom they left the hospital was not actually theirs.

By all accounts, the three of them lived in a happy home. But as Manon grew up, Davy started to question if he was really her father because of her appearance.

iStock

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBM_BTF’); });

He walked out, but Manon and her mother formed an incredibly close bond over the years. The only problem was that after he left, Davy demanded that Manon undergo DNA testing so that he could get out of paying child support.

iStock

The tests didn’t just confirm that Davy was not Manon’s father. Shockingly, the girl’s DNA revealed that Sophie was not her mother either.

iStock

In her drunken stupor, the nurse who’d returned Manon to her mother accidentally picked up the wrong baby. Both of them were heartbroken, but their mother-daughter bond was unshakable.

Getty Images

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’); });

Sophie was conflicted. Somewhere in the world was her biological daughter, but the relationship she’d already formed with the little girl she raised on her own was something she could never break. She panicked at the thought of Manon’s birth parents wanting her back.

Getty Images

The two families eventually ended up meeting, but the girls remained with the parents who raised them. All parties involved were given hefty settlements from the hospital that had caused them so much confusion and pain.

Getty Images

The situation was obviously traumatic for everyone, but at the end of the day, these two had each other. Sophie even went on to have more children with her new partner, Stephane.

Getty Images

But Sophie loves Manon just as much as her biological children. As the mother explained to a French news network, “My feelings for Manon are eternal and as powerful as those I have for my other children. There is no difference.”

Getty Images

The two families affected by this glaring oversight are no longer in contact with one another, primarily because they’ve already built worlds around the children who left the hospital with them that day. Fortunately, those worlds are still spinning.

Watch The Creepy Moment This Wet Floor Sign Starts Moving On Its Own

In movies, ghosts smash glasses, rip curtains, and open cabinets, but this security footage just might be proof of the cleanest ghost ever.

Recently, 31-year-old Kathy Round was straightening up a back room of the pub she co-manages when security footage caught something odd. She’d heard rumors that ghosts haunted the 200-year-old joint, but she never experienced anything herself. That is, until a wet floor sign and a mop started moving.

Watch the bizarre footage below. As soon as Round’s back is turned, the sign begins to move.

After she uploaded the video, she was contacted by paranormal investigators. They plan to go ghost hunting in the old pub. Hopefully, they’ll find an explanation for whatever caused this.

The Inside Of This Abandoned Asylum Is Just As Unsettling As You’d Expect

Most people wouldn’t feel comfortable wandering around an abandoned mental asylum. Horror movies have taught us that it’s never a good idea!

The photographer behind Freaktography, however, isn’t just anybody. He toes the line between totally creepy and hauntingly beautiful all the time. And this photo set from Buffalo, New York, is no exception…

Armed with nothing more than a camera, Freaktography ventured into the Buffalo State Asylum in New York. The facility had been abandoned since the mid-1970s.

The series of buildings is now considered a historic landmark known as the “Richardson Olmsted Complex.” There are plans to turn it into a resort and conference center, but renovations are far from over.

In fact, much of Buffalo State Asylum has been untouched for over 40 years.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot(‘/37886402/VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’, [300, 250], ‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF_58097fa6544f8’).addService(googletag.pubads()) googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_MB”, “VN_”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_SC”, “VN_ORGN”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_TS”, “TS_D”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_AT”, “VN_ORGN_PG_D_REV_1.0_ASYNC_DEFAULT”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_CC”, “VN_ORGN_D_UNK_118089_A”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_PG”, “1”); googletag.enableServices(); googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF_58097fa6544f8’); });

As a result, dust, decay, and (most likely) rats have taken over.

At one time, patients were segregated by sex. Males lived on the east side of the facility, while females were located on the west.

There was also a children’s ward. A deteriorating picture of Lucy and Charlie Brown can still be seen on the walls.

Freaktography didn’t run across any ghosts or evil spirits, but he did find this unsettling skeleton.

He also explored the labyrinth of tunnels under the facility, which staff once used to move from place to place.

The hospital even had its very own barber shop. It’s wild to think that no one has sat in this chair for more than four decades.

There’s no telling when (or if) the facility will be fully renovated. Clearly, a ton of work would have to be done to get this place up and running again. Not to mention, there’s always the chance of stirring up angry spirits!

These photos are an incredible look at a space that most people would never see, but they are only a taste of what Freaktography has to offer.

What about you? Would you go wandering around an abandoned mental asylum? Let us know in the comments! Personally, I’ll stick to looking at the pictures.

5 Of The Most Disgusting Things People Do For Their ‘Health Benefits’

People tend to try some pretty unsavory things when they believe they’re good for them.

New mothers eating their own placentas after they give birth is one of the nastier ones that comes to mind, but there are much, much worse things that people ingest for the supposed health benefits attached.

Not only do people eat gross things for medicinal purposes, though, but they also put themselves through disgusting processes that may not even work. Here’s just a small sampling of the most nausea-inducing practices.

1. In Chinese culture, many people eat leeches, believing it will help treat strokes, high blood pressure, and bruises.

2. Tiger penis soup is an Asian dish that many cultures believe enhances male masculinity. It is also considered to be an aphrodisiac, improving sexual performance.

3. Ear candling is an alternative medical procedure that people use to remove wax buildup. One end of a candle is placed in the ear canal, while the other is lit, supposedly creating a vacuum that draws out impurities. The catch? This can cause injuries like burns and even perforation of the eardrum.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot(‘/37886402/VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’, [300, 250], ‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF_5812ba7380da2’).addService(googletag.pubads()) googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_MB”, “VN_”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_SC”, “VN_ORGN”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_TS”, “TS_D”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_AT”, “VN_ORGN_PG_D_REV_1.0_ASYNC_DEFAULT”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_CC”, “VN_ORGN_D_UNK_118223_A”); googletag.pubads().setTargeting(“NOVA_PG”, “1”); googletag.enableServices(); googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF_5812ba7380da2’); });

4. Some celebrities use urine therapy, or urotherapy, for a supposedly wide range of health benefits, including immunization against allergies and treatment of calluses. This involves rubbing your own urine on your skin or even drinking it. However, there is no scientific evidence that proves it is therapeutic.

5. Fecal microbiota transplant is the process of taking fecal material from one healthy person and introducing it to another patient by means of an enema, colonoscopy, or disgustingly enough, by mouth in the form of capsules containing the freeze-dried material.

iStock

This has actually been proven to be an effective treatment for people with Clostridium difficile infection, which causes diarrhea, fever, nausea, and abdominal pain. It is becoming more and more popular in North America and Europe.

Meet David Berkowitz, One Of The Worst Serial Killers Of All Time

I think we can agree that all serial killers are awful human beings, but some are far worse than others.

This is especially true for David Berkowitz, who called himself the “Son of Sam.” This man terrorized the people of New York City from 1976 to 1977.

Though police launched a massive manhunt against him, he not only eluded them, but he also left letters that taunted them and threatened more killings. And because of the press’s coverage of his letters, he became one of the world’s most notorious serial killers.

Berkowitz was born as Richard David Falco in 1953, but he had been the product of his mother, Elizabeth Broder’s affair with Joseph Klineman, a married man who wanted nothing to do with his newborn son. Worried that Klineman would leave her if she kept their baby, she gave him away a few days after he was born.

iStock

The baby was quickly adopted by Pearl and Nathan Berkowitz, who renamed him David Richard Berkowitz. Though his birth mother was still alive, they told their new son that she had died during childbirth.

He had a great childhood in the Bronx, but he became a troubled boy nonetheless.

Berkowitz hated school because he was constantly bullied for being adopted and he often had nightmares as a result of his morbid fascination with horror movies. He also carried horrible guilt because he believed that he was responsible for his biological mother’s death.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’); });

The only joy he seemed to get out of life was being with his mother, Pearl. But his dark side began to show when he secretly poisoned her pet parakeet because he was jealous of the attention it took away from him.

iStock

Though he adored his mother, he would scream at her and call her names at times. She took him to a child psychologist when he was 10, but it didn’t help.

iStock

Right before Pearl died of breast cancer when he was 14, Berkowitz yelled that he hated her and he hoped she would die. It was the last thing he would ever say to her.

In 1971, Berkowitz joined the U.S. Army at the age of 18 and served in South Korea. He was discharged in 1974 and returned to New York. This is when his adopted father, Nathan, told him that his birth mother hadn’t actually died. The young man decided to find his birth parents.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI2_BTF’); });

But after searching for months and coming up with nothing, he joined a cult of Satan worshipers to feel a sense of belonging. He took a liking to their dark rituals instantly, and even made a blood pact that he would serve the Devil.

iStock

Meanwhile, after a year of searching for his birth mother, he finally came in contact with her. However, he was soon horrified to discover the truth about his real father, whom he previously believed to be Tony Falco, her first husband.

iStock

He became enraged at this news, but he buried it deep inside and began seeing his mother less and less, quelling a deep desire to kill her and the rest of his birth family.

His murderous rage finally manifested itself when he stabbed a teenage girl named Michelle Forman with a hunting knife in 1975. Fortunately, she survived, but he never became a suspect and quickly moved to Yonkers, New York.

iStock

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI3_BTF’); });

Unfortunately for the people of New York City, however, his murder spree was only just beginning. In 1976, he began targeting young women and couples in a series of shooting attacks.

iStock

His killings were highly publicized and he quickly became known as the “.44 Caliber Killer” after his weapon of choice — but nobody knew his real identity.

Berkowitz ended up killing six people and injuring seven by 1977, when his nicknamed changed to the “Son of Sam” after police found a handwritten letter taunting them near the bodies of Alexander Esau and Valentina Suriani, a couple he had murdered.

In full, it read:

I am deeply hurt by your calling me a women hater. I am not. But I am a monster. I am the “Son of Sam.” I am a little “brat”. When father Sam gets drunk he gets mean. He beats his family. Sometimes he ties me up to the back of the house. Other times he locks me in the garage. Sam loves to drink blood. “Go out and kill” commands father Sam. Behind our house some rest. Mostly young — raped and slaughtered — their blood drained — just bones now. Papa Sam keeps me locked in the attic, too. I can’t get out but I look out the attic window and watch the world go by. I feel like an outsider. I am on a different wave length then everybody else — programmed too kill. However, to stop me you must kill me. Attention all police: Shoot me first — shoot to kill or else. Keep out of my way or you will die! Papa Sam is old now. He needs some blood to preserve his youth. He has had too many heart attacks. Too many heart attacks. “Ugh, me hoot it hurts sonny boy.” I miss my pretty princess most of all. She’s resting in our ladies house but I’ll see her soon. I am the “Monster” — “Beelzebub” — the “Chubby Behemouth.” I love to hunt. Prowling the streets looking for fair game — tasty meat. The wemon of Queens are z prettyist of all. I must be the water they drink. I live for the hunt — my life. Blood for papa. Mr. Borrelli, sir, I dont want to kill anymore no sir, no more but I must, “honour thy father.” I want to make love to the world. I love people. I don’t belong on Earth. Return me to yahoos. To the people of Queens, I love you. And I wa want to wish all of you a happy Easter. May God bless you in this life and in the next and for now I say goodbye and goodnight. Police — Let me haunt you with these words; I’ll be back! I’ll be back! To be interrpreted as — bang, bang, bang, bank, bang — ugh!! Yours in murder Mr. Monster

Sam turned out to be Berkowitz’s neighbor, Sam Carr, who happened to be the father of two of the Satanic cult members. Later on, after Berkowitz was finally arrested for his crimes, he claimed that Sam was the Devil and that he’d sent demons to tell him to kill.

He also sent another disturbing letter directly to newspaper columnist Jimmy Breslin, threatening to kill again on the one-year anniversary of his first shooting.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI4_BTF’); });

It ended up being published a week later in the newspaper after Breslin notified police, and it sold over one million copies. Berkowitz immensely enjoyed how famous his killer identity had become and loved the power he felt from keeping the city in fear.

The people of New York became so terrified after reading it that women cut their hair short and dyed it blonde to avoid becoming his victims, as he seemed to prefer shooting women with long, dark hair.

iStock

Berkowitz’s reign of terror finally came to an end when a woman named Cacilia Davis told police she had seen a man walking by her with a suspicious object in his hand before she ran away and heard shots fired behind her. His car had been parked there that night, so police checked every vehicle that had been ticketed in the area and Berkowitz’s car turned up in their search.

iStock

When they went through his vehicle, they found a rifle, a bag full of ammunition, maps of the crime scenes, and another threatening letter.

They knew they had their man and apprehended him later that night as he got into his car. He did not struggle, but smiled proudly and quickly confessed to all of the shootings and pled guilty to his crimes.

In 1978, Berkowitz was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for each of his murders, and remains at Attica Correctional Facility in New York.

He first claimed to be possessed by a demon, but said later in 1979 that he had lied about it and had really felt anger towards women in general, causing him to want to murder them.

A lot of people believed that Berkowitz would try to sell his story to a writer or filmmaker because he was such a big presence in the press, so the New York State Legislature passed the “Son of Sam laws,” which were designed to keep criminals from profiting off the publicity of their crimes.

Since he has been in prison, Berkowitz has converted to evangelical Christianity and claims that being involved in the Satanic cult was a big reason why he murdered all those people. But many are convinced that if he were to be released, he’d drop his religion and go right back to killing.

I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say that I definitely agree with them.

9 Real-Life Ghost Encounters People Have Had After Watching Scary Movies

I’ve always been a huge fan of scary movies, but I won’t lie. Some of them have given me horrible nightmares.

Although I’m okay with the occasional bad dream because I love the genre so much, I don’t think I could continue watching horror flicks if they brought real paranormal activity into my life.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); });

The people below know exactly what I mean, because they’ve shared seriously terrifying stories about what happened to them after watching (and even starring in) horror films.

1. Vera Farmiga, who starred in “The Conjuring” and “The Conjuring 2,” said that when she went home from filming one night, she found three slashes across her laptop’s screen. Director James Wan also saw his dog growling one night at what appeared to be nothing at all.

iStock

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBM_BTF’); });

The Perrons, the real family that the film was based on, came to the set one day. When they went home, Carolyn Perron felt a strange presence push her to the ground.

2. Nancy P. told Week In Weird about the chilling nightly visitor she had to entertain after watching “The Conjuring 2.”

iStock

I wanted to send an email to let you know that strange things have started happening in my house after my [husband] and I watched “The Conjuring 2.” Everything was fine until the end of the movie when Lorraine said the name “Valak.” As soon as she said the name, our back door swung open and it sounded like someone came running into the house. When my husband went into the kitchen to check, there was no one there. For the last three days, we have heard knocking on our walls at night and the sound of someone walking up our stairs. I know it is because of that movie and we’re already talking about calling a priest over for a blessing on the house. There is something wrong with that movie.

3. Maria B. and her family were plagued by a destructive phantom after they watched part of “The Conjuring 2” as well.

iStock

Just wanted to throw this out there. Last night we watched part of “The Conjuring 2.” Not all of it, since my son was scared already. My husband went to go put my son off to bed and slept with him. At almost 3 a.m., my husband came back to our room. [He] lies down in bed and in our closet we hear a sound of dishes breaking. My husband gets up turns on the light. And the picture of us married, the beautiful picture frame it stood in was broken in two. I should not have agreed to watch that movie. All my stuff in my closet is put away so neatly. I am still trying to understand how it could have flown and broken like that. Sorry to have bugged you, just thought you should know. People should not watch that movie.

4. Gina Frost from the U.K. suffered through 40 years of terrifying hallucinations after watching “The Exorcist” as a teenager.

iStock

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’); });

Just one week later, I was in my bedroom and I began seeing rats running up and down the walls. I ended up locking myself in my bedroom for weeks because I was so petrified. I thought I was going mad. It took me about nine weeks before I felt like I could go back into the world.

Ever since then, I have been experiencing awful hallucinations that make me feel sick. I hallucinate about my own death. It’s like I am watching a film in my head where I am being ripped apart and tortured. It is enough to turn anybody’s stomach and it makes me feel ill.

The hallucinations have taken over my life when it comes to social situations. Ever since I was 18, I have tried to avoid being in social situations just in case I have a hallucination. Between the ages of 18 and 39, the hallucinations were erratic, but over the past 10 years they have gotten worse.

At one point, I was having up to three hallucinations a week and each one lasted three minutes. I often felt exhausted afterwards.

I haven’t been able to watch a horror film since.

Although things got better for Frost after she started taking medication, her hallucinations still haven’t fully gone away.

5. After people went inside a theater in Rome to watch “The Exorcist,” lighting struck a nearby church and left the shape of a cross on the ground below. This film also caused many people to pass out and vomit while watching it that night.

iStock

Many creepy things also happened during the making of the movie. Several actors and their family members (including relatives of the crew) died shortly after filming was finished, and multiple fires broke out on set.

6. Jennifer Carpenter, star of “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” believes that she was followed home by some kind of entity during the making of the movie.

iStock

When we were shooting, my stereo kept turning itself on in the middle of the night. It freaked me out because it started playing Pearl Jam’s “Alive” — just the “I’m still alive” part. It stayed with me for a while.

7. In the middle of watching “The Conjuring 2,” Joanne P. and her family heard terrifying screams that weren’t part of the movie.

iStock

We were just watching “The Conjuring 2” and my family paused it while I went to my bedroom to change into my pajamas. As soon as I walked into my bedroom, I could hear loud screaming. I thought they turned the TV up really loud in the living room, but then realized it was coming through my bedroom TV speaker. There was nothing on my TV. My two sons, grandson, and son’s girlfriend all witnessed it. Needless to say, we stopped watching the movie.

8. Actress JoBeth Williams said that during the filming of “Poltergeist,” she found the pictures on her walls hanging crookedly every night, even though she fixed them every time.

iStock

Heather O’ Rourke, the star of the movie, even passed away at only 12 years old, but she wasn’t the only actress to die. Dominique Dunne was murdered by her ex-boyfriend the same year the movie was released.

It was believed that real human skeletons were used in the film and that this cursed everyone associated with it.

9. William Castle, the producer of “Rosemary’s Baby,” received many letters from people who had watched the movie. They told him that he had unleashed evil by making it. Not long after, he suffered a urinary blockage and had to have surgery. During his operation, he reportedly shouted, “Rosemary, for God’s sake, drop the knife!”

iStock

Director Roman Polanski’s pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, was tragically murdered by Charles Manson a year after the film’s release, and John Lennon was shot outside of the hotel that’s in the movie.

Composer Krzysztof Komeda also passed away one year after the release due to a brain aneurism, just like one of the characters did in the movie.

(via Week in Weird / Mirror / Dread Central)

As much as it pains me to say this, I might have to take a break from watching horror films for a while. Those stories are just way too freaky.
