This News Doesn’t Bode Well For Avoiding An Asteroid In The Future

If you were around back in the late 1990s, you probably remember the brief love affair that America had with asteroid disaster films (“Deep Impact” was clearly the superior film). The movies brought an awareness to the general public of the possibility that Earth could be destroyed at any moment by a random, giant rock from space.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); });

Luckily, we have the folks at NASA watching out for us and keeping an eye on the sky. With all their great technology, there’s no way an asteroid could possibly sneak up on us…right? Well, that’s where you’d be wrong.

This week, NASA researchers spotted and catalogued a rather large asteroid by the name of 2016 QA2. Barely hours after it was first spotted, QA2 zipped by Earth, at a distance even closer than our moon.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBM_BTF’); });

Luckily, in the case of QA2, even if it had struck Earth, the damage would have been minimal — at least compared to the kind portrayed in various Hollywood films.

Unfortunately, there are a ton of asteroids out there. Which makes it kind of an impossible task to spot and catalogue them all.

To protect Earth from further asteroid impacts, Congress tasked NASA with an ambitious goal to be able to detect 90 percent of all asteroids 450 feet in size or larger by 2020. Sadly, funding shortfalls have put a damper on accomplishing this on time.

One Intoxicated Nurse Changed Two Families’ Lives Forever With A Monumental Mistake

Normally, switched-at-birth narratives are reserved for network dramas and blockbuster movies, but Sophie Serrano’s story is a real-life nightmare.

When she was 18 years old, the French woman gave birth to a beautiful baby girl with her boyfriend, Davy. The two were thrilled when their little one, Manon, came into the world. But shortly after her birth, nurses placed Manon in an incubator to deal with a case of jaundice. The new mother felt a twinge of anxiety, but she was assured that everything would be okay.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); });

And that certainly would’ve been the case had the nurse who returned Manon to her mother not been intoxicated at the time. As soon as Sophie held her baby, she knew that something was wrong. Convinced that she was just being paranoid, however, she and Davy went home to start a new life with their tiny addition. Little did they know that the baby with whom they left the hospital was not actually theirs.

By all accounts, the three of them lived in a happy home. But as Manon grew up, Davy started to question if he was really her father because of her appearance.

He walked out, but Manon and her mother formed an incredibly close bond over the years. The only problem was that after he left, Davy demanded that Manon undergo DNA testing so that he could get out of paying child support.

iStock

The tests didn’t just confirm that Davy was not Manon’s father. Shockingly, the girl’s DNA revealed that Sophie was not her mother either.

iStock

In her drunken stupor, the nurse who’d returned Manon to her mother accidentally picked up the wrong baby. Both of them were heartbroken, but their mother-daughter bond was unshakable.

Sophie was conflicted. Somewhere in the world was her biological daughter, but the relationship she’d already formed with the little girl she raised on her own was something she could never break. She panicked at the thought of Manon’s birth parents wanting her back.

Getty Images

The two families eventually ended up meeting, but the girls remained with the parents who raised them. All parties involved were given hefty settlements from the hospital that had caused them so much confusion and pain.

Getty Images

The situation was obviously traumatic for everyone, but at the end of the day, these two had each other. Sophie even went on to have more children with her new partner, Stephane.

Getty Images

But Sophie loves Manon just as much as her biological children. As the mother explained to a French news network, “My feelings for Manon are eternal and as powerful as those I have for my other children. There is no difference.”

Getty Images

The two families affected by this glaring oversight are no longer in contact with one another, primarily because they’ve already built worlds around the children who left the hospital with them that day. Fortunately, those worlds are still spinning.

This Drone Captured Something You Would Only Expect To See In A Horror Movie

Sharks might seem cute and cuddly to some, especially after their treatment in various Pixar movies.

However, they are still deadly, focused, killing machines. As evidence for this I present the following drone video featuring a group of tiger sharks in Australia absolutely tearing into the carcass of a dead whale.

The circle of life, my friends:

That is both awesome and brutal…just when you thought nature couldn’t get any more violent.

She Was Driving In A Thunderstorm When She Caught This Epic Explosion On Camera

When I was little, my parents used to tell me that lightning was just God and the people in heaven having a really elaborate photoshoot.

Nothing says summertime quite like an afternoon thunderstorm. The loud crashes of thunder mixed with the flashing imagery of lightning provide the perfect cinematic entertainment without having to pay to go to the movies.

As cool as thunder and lightning may be, the latter can also be incredibly dangerous. There are an estimated 100 lightning strikes on Earth every second, and each bolt can possess around one billion volts of electricity. Nearly 2,000 people are killed each year as a result of being struck by lightning.

Check out these 18 insanely awesome yet terrifying lightning strikes.

1. This incredible lightning strike at a train station caused a massive explosion that forced the cancellation of many departing trains.

2. This plane just narrowly escapes being struck by lightning.

3. It’s a bird. It’s a plane. Nope it’s just super-fast lightning!

4. This slow-motion video of a lightning strike looks like a bunch of tiny hands reaching out into the night sky.

5. A photo like this happens once in a lifetime.

8. There’s a light at the end of this rainbow!

9. I promise, this isn’t the beginning of the apocalypse.

10. They say lightning never strikes the same place twice. I think they’re wrong.

11. Who knew upward lightning was even possible?

12. Looks like there’s trouble in paradise.

13. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the filming of these lightning strikes.

14. Golden skies like these can only bring about bad news.

15. That was a close one!

16. This Peruvian soccer player survived being struck by lightning in the middle of the game.

17. A little too close for comfort.

18. This lightning really didn’t like that telephone pole…

I think I’ll keep watching lightning storms from the comfort of my living room window, thankyouverymuch.

Mount Roraima Looks Like It’s Straight Out Of The Movies, But It’s Entirely Real

This is probably what comes to mind when you picture a mountain — triangular, snowcapped peaks piercing the sky.

But Mount Roraima is about to change that notion.

The flat-faced tepui, or tabletop mountain, spans three countries’ borders in South America: Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana.

From afar, it might not look particularly impressive…

But upon closer inspection, the 1,300-foot cliffs are quite breathtaking.

A photo posted by Planet (@lonelyplanetfriend) on May 25, 2015 at 12:17am PDT

Roraima is part of Canaima National Park and the tabletop peaks are some of the oldest geological formations on Earth.

They date back to two billion years ago.

Because of this, tepuis like Roraima are inhabited by plants and animals that aren’t found anywhere else on the planet.

It’s not uncommon for the sky-high mountain to be enveloped in cloud cover.

While it might seem impossible, people actually climb the plateau.

5 Of The Most Disgusting Things People Do For Their ‘Health Benefits’

People tend to try some pretty unsavory things when they believe they’re good for them.

New mothers eating their own placentas after they give birth is one of the nastier ones that comes to mind, but there are much, much worse things that people ingest for the supposed health benefits attached.

Not only do people eat gross things for medicinal purposes, though, but they also put themselves through disgusting processes that may not even work. Here’s just a small sampling of the most nausea-inducing practices.

1. In Chinese culture, many people eat leeches, believing it will help treat strokes, high blood pressure, and bruises.

2. Tiger penis soup is an Asian dish that many cultures believe enhances male masculinity. It is also considered to be an aphrodisiac, improving sexual performance.

3. Ear candling is an alternative medical procedure that people use to remove wax buildup. One end of a candle is placed in the ear canal, while the other is lit, supposedly creating a vacuum that draws out impurities. The catch? This can cause injuries like burns and even perforation of the eardrum.

4. Some celebrities use urine therapy, or urotherapy, for a supposedly wide range of health benefits, including immunization against allergies and treatment of calluses. This involves rubbing your own urine on your skin or even drinking it. However, there is no scientific evidence that proves it is therapeutic.

5. Fecal microbiota transplant is the process of taking fecal material from one healthy person and introducing it to another patient by means of an enema, colonoscopy, or disgustingly enough, by mouth in the form of capsules containing the freeze-dried material.

This has actually been proven to be an effective treatment for people with Clostridium difficile infection, which causes diarrhea, fever, nausea, and abdominal pain. It is becoming more and more popular in North America and Europe.

This Guy Rendered His Own Brain Scan In 3-D And It’s Morbid, But Also Fascinating

If you stop and think about it, medical technology is almost like modern-day science fiction.

Although the media and society at large pay attention to technological advancements, an outsized share of that attention is focused on more consumer-oriented inventions.

What gets lost in the shuffle is medical technology that is slowly becoming the stuff we once only found in books and movies. Take, for example, what Redditor taurus_manure was able to do following an MRI scan for migraines.

He was able to take data from his MRI scan and use another piece of software to create these 3-D renderings of his own skull.

Pretty wild, right? According to taurus_manure, the process of producing work like this is surprisingly easy.

What you need to do is first get a copy of the MRI data from your doctor. You might have to pay a small fee, but most will give these scans out for free.

Then you can take the 2-D images from the MRI data and combine them to create 3-D versions.

For the more technologically advanced, you can do this process by hand, but the Redditor suggests searching for DICOM 3-D reconstruction software on Google if you’re a beginner.

With the help of such software, you can get up close and personal with the inside of your own head.

But why would anyone do this?

Well, for one, 3-D models can be used to create 3-D printed body parts.

Unless you’re a doctor from the future, you’ll only be able to print those parts in plastic. That being said, it’d still be pretty cool to see your body turned inside out.

Say cheese!

(source: Reddit)

That would be awesome to have on display when guests come over. Talk about a conversation starter, am I right?

6 ‘Harmless’ Things That Are Actually Signs Of Major Health Problems

WARNING: if you’re a hypochondriac, you probably shouldn’t read this!

In movies, sometimes a character will interrupt a conversation with a cough that seems innocent at the time, but sure enough, a few scenes later, everyone’s at that character’s funeral lamenting, “We should have seen the signs!”

This is, of course, just a plot device, and it doesn’t bear any resemblance to the real world…or does it? One might think your body would tell you if it’s dying — “HEY, LISTEN UP! GO TO THE DOCTOR” — but oftentimes, it warns us in the most frustratingly subtle ways. Here are some symptoms that may seem harmless at first…but could end up spelling your doom.

Weak teeth = bad stomach

iStock

Despite brushing, keeping soda out of your diet, and doing virtually everything your dentist tell you to do, is your enamel still too weak? Well, then you might have an acid reflux problem in your stomach! While sugary treats wear down the enamel on the front of your teeth, acid from your stomach may be eroding the backs!

Hair loss = prostate cancer

There may be a link between hair loss and prostate cancer in men. Studies show that men with moderate balding are 83% more likely to get prostate cancer down the line. But how does hair protect you from prostate cancer? It doesn’t! The real culprit is testosterone. Too much of it is the true cause of balding AS WELL AS problems with the prostate.

Changes in handwriting = Parkinson’s disease

Write a sentence down on a piece of paper. Now write it nine more times. Notice any noticeable differences? If you see that each time you wrote the sentence the words got smaller and more crowded together, it could be an early sign of Parkinson’s. You see Parkinson’s causes the nerves to stop producing dopamine, which causes stiffness in your hands. This can affect your handwriting.

var OX_ads = OX_ads || []; OX_ads.push({ slot_id: “537251602_5700810b3ead9”, auid: “537251602” });

Long pointer finger + shorter ring finger = schizophrenia

If your pointer finger is longer than your ring finger, it may be an indicator of schizophrenia. A recent study confirms that men with this sort of digit ratio are likely to have a disturbed hormonal balance that could also lead to schizophrenia.

Inability to calculate tip = Alzheimer’s

Is the reason you’re not tipping well enough not the fault of the service you received, but because you’re too afraid to do the calculations? The inability to perform simple math equations could be a early warning sign of Alzheimer’s. One brain fart might not mean much, but if it happens on a regular basis, it could be a signal for memory problems later in life.

Snoring = heart disease

iStock

If you snore, you may actually be keeping up you partner with your weakening heart. Sleep apnea is linked to the thickening of arteries in the neck, which can lead to strokes and heart attacks more than commonly thought heart detriments (smoking or increased weight).

Of course, these symptoms can be caused by any number of things, so don’t go buying a plot in the cemetery just yet. Consult a doctor if your symptoms are really troubling you, no matter how small. You might come off looking like a crazy person, but a little piece of mind is better than freaking out over it.
